Entering the world as a new parent is a truly wonderful and exciting time and it is everything you ever dreamt of, right. But let’s be real for a moment, it is also really difficult, it is exhausting, it is emotional, it is messy – it is perfectly imperfect. I like to document the un-staged reality, the connections and strive to celebrate you in your square-shape-doesn’t-fit-the-round-hole glory. What better place to do that, than where the action takes place every single day, where you have chosen to set your roots and raise your tribe, where all your memories are made… your home.

Why have a newborn photoshoot at home?
When I come to you, you don’t have to worry about being out of the house on time, you don’t have to worry about packing a bag with the kitchen sink in it, you don’t have to worry about what the weather is doing outside, you don’t have to worry about nap times or feeding schedules or changing rooms. We just go with the flow. Cuddles. Coffee. Conversations. Changes. Calm.

What should we wear?
This is absolutely up to you and I always say, whatever you feel comfortable and content in. Neutral and coordinating colours work well if you do want to match one another, but then so do bold and bright colours – just be yourself. I personally think less is more for babies, a simple white vest focuses full attention on little one, and if you do want images of hands and feet, make sure they are easily accessible!

What happens if my baby needs a feed?
I am a mother of two, and remember feeling like all I did was feed and feed and feed – trust me when I say it’s ok, I get it. I am led by you and your baby’s needs, if a feed is needed, we stop for a break. I always ask parents if they want me to capture them feeding, it is such a monumental part of the overall journey and for me personally, it’s one of the most precious moments I get to capture for new parents. But if you’d rather take five upstairs by yourself, that is absolutely fine too.

Little G’s family have kindly let me share a selection of images from her hour long ‘home sweet home’ session, and it’s a lovely example of the details, relationships and connections that can be captured in that time.
